Old English Bulldog

Also referred to as the Olde English Bulldogge, Olde Bulldog, or the Leavitt Bulldog, the latter being the last name of the breed’s founder, this breed was developed in the United States in the 1970’s with the intention of creating a dog with the looks of the 18th century English Bulldog but as an original breed. Using breeding parameters developed by Ohio State University, the size of this beautiful dog is typically 50-80 pounds and stands 17-20 inches tall at the shoulder.

The breed is imposing to look at with a fierce expression and muscular build, but are loyal, happy, and loving dogs. The typical disposition for the breed is that of a confident dog that is happiest with his family. Regular exercise for the breed consists of regular walks around the neighborhood and some games of fetch. As with most “bully” breeds, they do not do well in the heat, and are prone to heat exhaustion. Air conditioning in the warm weather months and remaining indoors during the heat of the day except for housebreaking needs is recommended. Due to their loose jowls, the breed does drool a bit, especially after drinking water. Early socialization and obedience training is highly recommended for this breed to ensure this strong dog is well mannered and of good character. The breed does have a propensity to show territorial displays and dominance towards other dogs, especially of the same gender.

His coat is short and easy to care for with occasional brushing and a bath. Shedding is considered minimal. Wiping and cleaning inside the folds/wrinkles in his face is recommended to prevent skin infections from developing. Average lifespan is 10-14 years.
